2 Top Career Tips
1) Make sure you’re maintaining your network before you need them. Maintain close relationships and nurture them. Having core friends and allies is extremely helpful.
2) If you’re trying to get into tech, no one cares what school you went to. They want to see the work you did and the impact it had. Focus on how you did something and how it directly affected the business. Saving business costs or increasing revenue are two examples.

Worst Career Moment
Joe describes how he moved to Honolulu to find a software engineering position. He remembers flailing during an in-person whiteboard interview. It was a demoralizing experience, but he realized he had to improve and made him better at what he does.
Career Highlight
Receiving direct messages from people who’ve found a video or tutorial that has been helpful to them. However, Joe’s Ted Talk in 2021 is still the highlight so far. Joe says he still craves the attention of the developer community.
The Future
Joe believes that the dream of tech of the 2010s is dead. That being said, tech is still one of the few sectors that allows you to break through socio-economic barriers. AI disruption is having an impact in the short term. However, Joe is optimistic that things will improve in the longer term and will be a cool, thriving place to work again.

What first attracted you to a career in I.T.?
Joe says that he failed up to Computer Science after finding his Physics major too difficult.
What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?
When someone needs help, try to help them if you can.
What is the worst career advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t worry about the possibility of being made redundant.
If you had to begin your career again in today’s world, what would you do?
Joe would do something that can’t be outsourced. For example, becoming a barber or doing something mechanical.
What career objectives are you currently focusing on?
Joe says that he doesn’t really know. But he wants to stay as an engineer and remain technical.
What’s the number one non-technical skill that has helped you in your career so far?
Go to events in person and make new connections. Online relationships are typically shallow. Try to get out as much as possible.
What do you do to keep your own career energized?
Anything not involving a computer, such as art and goofy projects.
What do you do in your spare time away from technology?
Gardening and smart home integration projects.
