Mark Herschberg

In this week’s show, Phil talks to Mark Herschberg, who has spent his career launching and developing new ventures at startups, Fortune 500 companies, and in academia. He helped to start the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program, dubbed MIT’s “career success accelerator”. At Harvard Business School, he helped to create a platform used to teach finance at prominent business schools, and most recently, he has authored “The Career Toolkit – Essential Skills For Success That No One Taught You”

Mark talks to Phil about the value to be found in incremental victories through small negotiations. He also discusses why we should all create a career plan as soon as possible.

Worst Career Moment

The people parts are always the most difficult part of engineering. This was proved when one of Mark’s hires was negotiated with by the CEO of the company, resulting in terms that were not acceptable to anyone, and not beneficial to Mark’s team.

Career Highlight

Mark helped to track down terrorists and cyber-criminals on the dark web, implementing a system that involved intelligence gathering, which was exciting. Helping to launch new business units for some renowned operations, was also quite an honour.

The Future

IT is a field that will continue to grow over the decades as more industries move online. It is a sector with huge potential.

What first attracted you to a career in I.T.?

An early interest in physics and law was amalgamated by a guidance counsellor, who suggested programming as a pursuit.

What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Focus on who you work with. It’s far better to surround yourself with engaging people, which leads to inspiration.

What is the worst career advice you’ve ever received?

That there is a need for specialisation at all levels. Diversification of skills adds value.

If you had to begin your career again in today’s world, what would you do?

Mark would have focused on leadership, communication, negotiation and networking.

What career objectives are you currently focusing on?

Working on helping people to develop their own skills, as we are all more effective if we pull together.

What’s the number one non-technical skill that has helped you in your career so far?

Communication skills have been key to helping Mark improve and develop.

What do you do to keep your own career energized?

Working with startups means that the job is always fresh and diverse.

What do you do in your spare time away from technology?

Reading, teaching classes, and entertaining friends at private gatherings or dinner parties. Mark is also involved with repopulating the world’s coral.
