Anna Skoulikari

Anna Skoulikari is the author of “Learning Git” and creator of the course “Git for complete beginners”. Anna has worked as a UX designer, frontend developer and technical writer. She describes herself as a storyteller, author, multi-hyphenate creative, tech educator and much more.

1) Consider all the advice you hear as a buffet of options. Then pick the items that resonate with you. Anna sees her career progression as continually evolving and is constantly asking herself, “What do I want to do when I grow up?”. The transitions within Anna’s career weren’t always smooth and typically included some doubt and fear.
2) Figure out what works for you. Any advice people give you should be considered as an option.

Worst Career Moment

When Anna transitioned from frontend developer to technical writer some people questioned her decision. However, she knew deep down that being a developer wasn’t right for her. This was a difficult period for Anna. The lesson it taught Anna is to listen to your gut and work out what works for you.

Career Highlight

Anna’s says that her career highlight is definitely publishing her book. It was a two-year process and she regarded it as her book baby.

It was an amazing, creative project that she was able to realise and put into the world. Anna is already working on her next book project.

The Future

There is great flexibility within tech careers. Anna says that she identifies as an introvert and that the ability to work remotely whilst enjoying an incredible career is something that excites her.

What first attracted you to a career in I.T.?

Curiosity. Anna was curious about how websites and apps were built. She then joined a coding bootcamp to learn to code.

What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Anna doesn’t feel that she’s actually received any career advice. However, she has listened to podcast interviews about careers in tech.

What is the worst career advice you’ve ever received?

When Anna left her Masters course she was told it was a huge mistake. However, Anna is happy with the decision she made.

If you had to begin your career again in today’s world, what would you do?

Looking back at her career, Anna believes she wouldn’t change anything.

What career objectives are you currently focusing on?

Anna is exploring taking on a new challenge. A next adventure.

What’s the number one non-technical skill that has helped you in your career so far?

Not just one. Communications, storytelling, organization, empathy and so on.

What do you do to keep your own career energized?

Anna taps into her intuition and listens to her gut feeling as well as following her curiosity.

What do you do in your spare time away from technology?
