2 Top Career Tips

1) To get the best out of our careers, it’s important that we enjoy the work we do. The easiest way to do this is to turn a talk into play wherever possible. Exploration and entertainment are the keys to job satisfaction.
2) Teaching someone how to code is not difficult, but it’s far more difficult to teach someone to be a better person. When we implement new measures, we should endeavour to do so in an inclusive way. Build your team, rather than hoard credit.

Show Notes

Worst Career Moment

After devoting himself to a highly-paid career path, Jason felt his social life and physical health slipping away, to the point where his life suddenly became very unhappy. Never sacrifice your life or happiness for money.

Career Highlight

Jason’s current position strikes exactly the right balance between enjoyment and financial stability. He could earn more money as a consultant, but the role he currently enjoys allows him a degree of creativity, provides a living, and he gets to experience each day with his friends in the industry.

The Future

The opportunities that seem to be emerging remotely, and the ways in which these remote opportunities benefit far more people than ever before. Helping disadvantaged sectors to emerge as the next IT rock stars is incredibly exciting and empowering.

The Reveal

What first attracted you to a career in I.T.?

A lack of finances led to Jason taking chances and dipping his toe into the industry!

What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Draw the box smaller. Shrink the problem to its essence and it will always appear less complicated.

What is the worst career advice you’ve ever received?

That we’re only in IT because we’re following our passions. We’re all seeking a salary through IT, so treat it like a job.

If you had to begin your career again in today’s world, what would you do?

Jason would focus more upon trying to find the healthy communities and trying to become a high contributing active member of them.

What career objectives are you currently focusing on?

Focusing more upon how to operate well in a team. Many in the industry begin as independents, and so practicing integration and collaboration is vital.

What’s the number one non-technical skill that has helped you in your career so far?

Being the lead singer of a band. As the lead singer, Jason had to learn to be a front man before a room of people who didn’t care about him. It also helped to refine his negotiation skills.

What do you do to keep your own career energized?

Look for the opportunities to bring play to work whenever possible.

What do you do in your spare time away from technology?

Cooking – especially the gradual perfection of the “Smash Burger”!
